A spam trap is simply a honeypot to collect spam. There are many ways to avoid pure spam traps if you utilize good mailing list hygiene. It gets more complicated now that Microsoft has decided to turn abandoned Hotmail accounts into spam traps. If the subscriber then abandons that address, it may be converted to a recycled spam trap by the mailbox provider.
They will never publish, share, leak or sell the list of their spam traps. For example, a customer provides a sales representative their email address verbally while making a purchase and the sales representative makes a spelling error while inputting the address into the brand's database.
Then, you can send a confirmation email to that segment of addresses to find out which of them want to continue to receive your emails. Recycled Traps are real email addresses that were used by real people in the past, but were abandoned and converted into a trap by the email service provider.
Review your internal processes to make sure there is no way that email addresses can "sit" in some database for a long period of time and then be mailed to, or be sent to by one system even though a different system received a hard-bounce. It's important to be in control of your lists from opt-ins to hard bounce or unsubscribe.
However, it's easier to fall into a recycled spam trap than a pure spam trap. To ensure that the email address provided is real - and not an invalid email or a spam trap address - you need to require a double opt-in. The overall impact of having spam traps in your list depends on how many of verify email address them are in your list, how many times you send to it, and how the owner of that spam trap email handles a send to it.
Providers simply will not tell you which spamtraps you hit as setting up a new address takes valuable time and expensive resources they don't have. During submission of address, sometimes there is a typo or unintentional error and sometimes users don't want to reveal their original email addresses.

Spam traps are there to protect the end user against email senders that are either gathering emails illegitimately or aren't honoring email marketing best practices. Dead domain traps are similar to dead address traps. Simply because in the sea of emails they receive every day, they have to choose which ones to open.
