A spam trap is simply a honeypot to collect spam. There are many ways to avoid pure spam traps if you utilize good mailing list hygiene. It gets more complicated now that Microsoft has decided to turn abandoned Hotmail accounts into spam traps. If the subscriber then abandons that address, it may be converted to a recycled spam trap by the mailbox provider.

They will never publish, share, leak or sell the list of their spam traps. For example, a customer provides a sales representative their email address verbally while making a purchase and the sales representative makes a spelling error while inputting the address into the brand's database.

To ensure that the email address provided is real - and not an invalid email or a spam trap address - you need to require a double opt-in. The overall impact of having spam traps in your list depends on how many of verify email address them are in your list, how many times you send to it, and how the owner of that spam trap email handles a send to it.

Providers simply will not tell you which spamtraps you hit as setting up a new address takes valuable time and expensive resources they don't have.
